In order to recognize the tremendous accomplishments of William Waterhouse (1931-2007) and Philip Bate (1909-1999) and to encourage double reed scholarship the International Double Reed Society (IDRS) is announcing the forthcoming publication of a Festschrift (celebratory publication) in honor of Waterhouse and Bate. Though aspects of the publication are technically a Gedenkschrift (memorial publication), the IDRS has decided that this publication not only serves as a memorial to two remarkable men, but also a celebration of their achievements and those of authors contributing to the project. Following the success of their well established Wind Chamber Music Course at Hawkwood College, the Aurora Ensemble will be running a summer school focusing on the wind octets of Mozart and Beethoven. The course is open to players of the oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon. Work will take place in fixed groups arranged by the tutors before the start of the course. Every session will be coached by a member of the Aurora Ensemble. Players will be expected to have done a little preparatory work on their own before the course begins (they will be advised which parts to prepare in advance). Owing to the nature of these pieces the minimum standard will be Grade 6 for horn and bassoon, and Grade 7 for clarinet and oboe.
