The spirited Oboe Concerto by Ruth Gipps was written when the composer was 20 years old and studying under the legendary Léon Goossens at the Royal College of Music, where Malcolm Arnold was a fellow student. As a fine oboist herself, the work demonstrates Gipps’ deep understanding and technical mastery of the instrument and reflects the expressive, lyrical style inspired by her teacher. For this performance, the oboe soloist will be the CBSO’s Principal Second Oboe, Emmet Byrne. With the recent resurgence in Gipps' music, this is a great opportunity to hear one of her major works in live performance.

Earlier in the day, hear Malcolm Arnold's Concertino for oboe and strings performed by Mateus Colares de Souza and the Albion Orchestra. For the festival's daytime concerts, refer to the website for timings, Cripps Hall venue, and entry by affordable Day Pass with free admission for students and under‑18s.
