Durham Double Reeds: The Next Generation Takes Flight!

What do you get when you combine talented young musicians, inspiring teachers, exciting performance opportunities and the generous support of the British Double Reed Society? The answer is Durham Double Reeds: The Next Generation: a flourishing project opening doors for the next generation of oboists and bassoonists across County Durham. 

Durham Music Service is delighted to celebrate the success of the project's first year, made possible through the generous support of the British Double Reed Society (BDRS). Thanks to this funding, young musicians from two Durham schools have accessed subsidised double reed tuition, specialist workshops, ensemble opportunities and a range of experiences designed to support their musical development. 

And what a first year it has been! Sixteen young oboists and bassoonists have embarked on their double reed journey, developing their skills and confidence through lessons, workshops and performances. Along the way, they have achieved important milestones through the Durham Music Service Secondary Framework. 

For many of these young players, the project has provided opportunities that may otherwise have been out of reach. The footage above showcases just a few of the talented musicians from Belmont Community School who have benefited so far. 

The excitement does not stop there. Durham Music Service is thrilled that BDRS funding will continue into a second year, allowing the project to expand into a primary school and introduce even more young people to the wonderful world of double reeds. 

There is also a major date for the diary. On 11 October 2026, Durham Music Service will host a Double Reed Day at the beautiful Ushaw Historic House, Durham. 

Victoria Bates, Deputy Head of Durham Music Service and an oboist herself, said: 

“I am absolutely thrilled that the British Double Reed Society has supported our ambition to host a double reed event in the North East of England. We have been delighted with the success of the project so far and the impact it has had on our young musicians. Bringing together the region's double reed community will be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate these achievements, inspire future players and share our passion for these wonderful instruments.” 

Durham Music Service would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the British Double Reed Society for its ongoing support. 

The future of double reeds in Durham is looking brighter than ever.
